ඡායාරූපකරණය ලෝකයේේ ප්‍රබලතම, සන්නිවේදන මාධ්‍යයක් සේම කලාත්මක මාධ්‍යයක් ලෙස පොදු පිළිගැනීම්යි. එක් නිමේෂයක දී සමස්ත ලෝකය පුරා සැරිසරන ඡායාරූප ප්‍රමාණය ඒ බව පැහැදිලි කරන එක් සාධකයකි. ඒ අනුව ඡායාරූපය අමතක කොට වත්මන් ලෝකයේ ජීවත් වීම පවා අසීරු කටයුත්තක් යැයි සඳහන් කිරීම් අතිශයෝක්තියක් නොවේ. එහෙත් රූපයේ ස්වභාවය, ගුණය හා එහි හැඩය පිළිබද ලාංකේය සමාජය කෙතරම් දැනුමවත් දැයි විමසා බැලීම වටී.

කැලණිය විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ, මානවශාස්ත්‍ර පීඨයේ නාට්‍ය හා රංග කලා සහ ප්‍රතිබිම්බ කලා අධ්‍යයන ඒකකය මගින් පවත්වාගෙන යනු ලබන ප්‍රතිබිම්බ කලාව, සිනමා හා රූප රූපවාහිනී අධ්‍යනය උපාධි පාඨමාලාවල සහ ඡායාරූප ශිල්ප ඩිප්ලෝමා පාඨමාලාවේ මූලික අරමුණ වන්නේ රූපය පදනම් වූ කලාව පිළිබඳ අධ්‍යයනයේ යෙදීමයි.

ලාංකීය පාසල් සිසු පරපුර මගින් ඡායාරූප ශිල්පය කලාවක් විධිමත් ලෙස යාවත්කාලීන කිරීම හා රූප සීමාවෙන් එහා ගිය චින්තනය පදනම් කරගත් ඡායාරූප ශිල්පීන් සමාජගත කිරීම මෙහි අරමුණු අතර වෙයි. එමෙන්ම වාණිජ අරමුණු මෙන්ම මානුෂානුෂීය අරමුණු ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීම හා ඡායාරූපය ඇසුරෙන් සමාජය සියුම් ලෙස කියවිය හැකි අනාගත පර පරපුරක් දායාද කිරීම සෙසු අරමුණු වෙයි.

Image Arts can be considered as one of the major subjects among the other, offered by the Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya. Mainly, the three components Photography, Film and Television can be regarded as Image Arts. The specialty lies in the fact that our main target is to provide an artistic aspect of the subject. Further, it is an honour to mention that only us, University of Kelaniya offers the unit Image Arts as a study course to learn about Sri Lankan Photography for the first time in Sri Lanka. 

The professionals and the beginners, those who cannot under take the internal degree programme, are offered a Diploma in photography in order to accomplish their targets in having an academic knowledge in photography. 

The duration of the diploma is one year and it is considered as NVQ level 05 or SLQF Level 03 national qualification. The diploma is offered consecutively for 10 years and it consists theory as well as practical teaching methods.

The aim of Drama & Theatre and Image Arts unit is to provide academic knowledge on its subjects and to share the knowledge with the society, which is a major social service that any university should practice.

The objective of this world photography day is to blend professionals, beginners and school children towards the photography subject. Many attempts will take place to share knowledge on photography to people those who lives in rural areas who does not have any facility to learn photography because of the remoteness to the cities. E-learning methods will be used to accomplish that objective and this attempt through the website is its initiation.
